​​Meet Jim Muncy and his Million-Mile Silverado​

People sometimes joke about the connection between country music and pickup trucks, but Chevrolet made the combination real by inviting truck owners to the Country Music Awards (CMA) Fest to tell their stories. One of the best stories came from Silverado owner Jim Muncy, who pulled up to the CMA in a Silverado with over 1 million miles on it. Michael Hohl Chevrolet congratulates him and his truck on their endurance and tells you more about it. 

Muncy is based in Toledo, Ohio, and has long served as a sales representative for Shrader Tire and Oil. He purchased his Duramax-powered 2007 Silverado new in October 2006. Since then, he has barely given it a rest, accumulating approximately 1000 miles every week as he calls on customers in his region, often carrying his company’s products in the pickup box. The truck is on its original engine and transmission, with no major repairs over the nearly 20 years he has had it. The Silverado’s mileage has long been a topic of conversation with customers. 

“This one has been through Ohio winters for 20 years,” says Muncy. “It gets used as a work truck. It is either full of drums of oil or tires for my customers.” 

Naturally, Muncy drew plenty of attention as a shining example of Chevrolet truck durability, though it turned out he wasn’t the only owner of a million-mile Silverado in attendance. Andy Sanford put nearly a million miles on his 2016 Silverado HD, powered by a Duramax diesel. Sanford, however, arrived in a 2026 Lakeshore Blue Metallic Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Crew Cab LTZ that is both the 16 millionth vehicle produced at the Flint assembly plant and powered by the 3.5-millionth Duramax diesel engine built by DMAX, a GM subsidiary. Sanford received a hero’s welcome when he visited the plant in Flint to observe his truck being built.  Muncy, however, is still driving his million-mile truck and says he would not hesitate to drive it across the country tomorrow. “Driving this truck every single day, all day long for work, as I go customer to customer, it’s kind of become an extension of me,” he said. That sounds like it has the makings of a country song.
