The Silverado dates back over 50 years but it was applied to a line of Chevrolet trucks that date back to 1918, Originally a name for the top trim level of Chevrolet’s C/K trucks above other trim names like Scottsdale and Cheyenne, the name was expanded to include all of Chevy’s half-ton pickups for the 1999 model year, with the name expanding again to include HD trucks the following year.
Since 1999, five generations of Silverado models have been among the best-selling vehicles in North America. Today’s Silverado offers a very broad product lineup. It is available in Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab configurations, with cargo beds measuring 5’8” and 6’6”, and an 8-foot bed available with the Regular Cab. Setting aside the Silverado EV for this comparison, the model is available with four internal combustion engines.
An 8-speed transmission is paired with the 2.7-liter engine, while all other engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The Silverado half-ton model line has nine trim levels, ranging from the basic Work Truck (WT), which simply gets the job done, to the luxury-level High Country, and up to the high-performance off-roader ZR2. With various body configurations, engine and drivetrain options, trim levels, packages, and features, it’s clear there is a Silverado for almost any pickup truck need you might have.

Ford has long been Chevrolet’s biggest rival, and nowhere is that rivalry more visible than in the full-size pickup truck category. The F-150 is the only vehicle sold in the U.S. with more sales than the Silverado, which means it also offers a wide range of choices, including Regular Cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew® cabs, and six different internal combustion engine options, including a hybrid drivetrain. However, the all-electric Lightning model has been discontinued. It also offers eight trim levels, many of which directly compete with Silverado trims, such as the basic XL, off-road capable Raptor®, and the luxurious Platinum.

Like Chevrolet, Dodge has produced pickup trucks for over a century. The Ram name was first applied to the Dodge pickup truck line in 1989. In 2009, Ram trucks became a separate division. In recent years, Ram has been replacing its Hemi V8s with the Hurricane series of 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, though a 5.7-liter HEMI engine returned for 2026. The base engine remains the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6. Models are available with a Quad Cab featuring short rear doors and a Crew Cab with four standard-sized doors. Cargo beds come in lengths of 5’7” and 6’4”. There are ten trim levels, starting with the basic Tradesman and culminating with the Tungsten, the flagship of the model line.

The Tundra is the newest model in this comparison, dating back to 1999. Toyota’s full-size pickup truck is named after a vast, flat, treeless Arctic region in Europe, Asia, and North America with permanently frozen subsoil. Its engine options are all based on its twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine, available in multiple states of tune, including an i-FORCE MAX hybrid version. All engines are paired with a 10-speed transmission. The Tundra does not have a two-door regular cab; instead, it offers a shortened four-door cab alongside its CrewMax full four-door cab. It offers 5.5-, 6.5-, and 8.1-foot beds, with the largest bed strictly paired with the smaller cab.
