A comparison of the Corvette against its competition is a questionable exercise at the outset. Most comparisons dwell on practical matters. This model has more rear legroom; this one has more cargo space. This one has better gas mileage, but it’s also available as a hybrid. Most of that can be dismissed when comparing the Corvette with its closest competitors. Even comparing performance figures can get sketchy pretty quickly. Your entry-level Corvette Stingray 1LT has 495 horsepower and can achieve a 0 to 60 time of about 2.8 seconds, reaching the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds at 112 mph, as tested by Car and Driver. The same publication shows the 1,250-horsepower ZR1X model reaching 60 in 2.1 seconds and the quarter mile in 9.2 seconds at 155 mph.
You can also buy more than three Stingrays for the price of one ZR1X, so the model range, to say the least, is rather wide. And of course, no Corvette is just a dragster. There are slalom and figure-8 times, as well as lap times at specific speedways to consider, and they will all vary not only by model but also by the packages you choose for each. Furthermore, some competitors have a similarly wide range of performance offerings.
Also, choosing the Corvette among its rivals isn’t just about performance. Any of these vehicles will get you noticed, so much of your decision can rest on which car you want to be seen in. Just try to come up with a metric for that! You can’t. So this may be less of a comparison, more of a discussion of the other players in the Corvettes league.
Unofficially, this has been the Corvette’s closest competitor for decades. For a long time, it was about German precision vs. American brawn, but American engineering has become quite precise as well. The 911 has always had to deal with the fact that its engine is in the wrong place. Not in the front, not in the middle, but in the rear, hanging over the rear axle. Once turbocharging significantly raised power, this configuration gave the 911 a widow-maker reputation, but Porsche engineers have done a remarkable job of engineering out the inherent destabilization of hanging the engine out the back.
There are so many versions of the 911 one wonders if even those in Stuttgart can keep track of them all, though the count as of this writing appears to be 16. The entry-level model is the Carrera, which has a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-6 producing 388 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque, good for a 0.60 time of 3.7 seconds. At its starting MSRP of $ 135,500, the closest Corvette would be the Z06 at $117,700, or $124,700 for the convertible. This will get you a 5.5-liter Flat-plane V8 with 670 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, capable of 0-60 in 2.6 seconds. Dollar-for-dollar, the Corvette has nearly always outperformed the 911. Porsche fans used to point to better handling or a better interior as justification, but that doesn’t apply anymore.
The BMW M4 is the Bavarian brand’s 2-seat convertible sports car. Born of an impulse to make a BMW Miata, the M4 has grown in sophistication, using the mechanicals of the M3 sports sedan. It is available in either a 473-hp or 523-hp version of the brand’s iconic 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-6 with a 6-speed manual transmission. Car and Driver recorded a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds and a quarter mile of 12.0 seconds at 121 mpg for the 473-hp model. The price starts at $72,795, but, like all BMWs, it can rise quickly and push $100K before you know it.
This puts it in the general price range of the Stingray 2LT convertible, which starts around $77K. The retractable hardtop lets you enjoy the same open-air driving, though admittedly, the Corvette has no three-pedal configuration to match the M4’s six-speed manual—just way more speed.
Ford, arguably Chevrolet’s closest competitor, has only sporadically fielded a direct 2-seat sports car competitor to the Corvette. The brand has regularly created high-performance Mustangs that can be seen as Corvette competitors in some respects. Lately, they have taken this to the extreme with the Mustang GTD, a barely street-legal version of the GTD racing vehicle with a price range that well exceeds even the highest Corvettes on offer.
The Mustang Dark Horse series is Ford’s more direct competitor to the Corvette. The series starts with a 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 producing 500 horsepower and 418 lb-ft of torque, making its power very comparable to the Stingray LT1, with which it shares a similar starting MSRP. That said, it still doesn’t quite match the Stingray’s performance, with Car and Driver measuring a 0-60 of 4.1 seconds and a quarter mile of 12.5 seconds, both slower than the Stingray, though the trap speed at the end of the quarter mile was 115, three mph higher than the Corvette. Skidpad testing shows 1.07g for the Dark Horse compared to 1.09 g for the Stingray.
Above the Dark Horse is the Dark Horse SC, which supercharges the V8, increasing its displacement to 5.2 liters and producing 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque. It starts at about $109,000 and can be optioned up to $150 – 175K. This puts it on par in price with the Corvette E-Ray Coupe, which features a hybrid version of the Stingray LT2 with a combined output of 655 hp and 595 lb-ft of torque. It is down on power compared to the SC, but it puts that power to all four wheels.
The Dark Horse SC figures were announced just a day before this writing, so there are no performance figures to compare with the E-Ray’s 2.5-second 0-60, 10.6-second quarter mile, or 1.08g on the skidpad. At this level, it is nearly academic anyway, aside from bragging rights, as these actions require a track and professional driving skills.
